If you have rat infestation, and you do not want to spend too much on traps, or make a trip to your local hardware store, you can build your own. This trap is not only easy to make, it’s also cheap, and it is a humane control option. Let’s take a look at how you can build and use the plastic bottle rat trap.
What You Need To Build the Trap
All you need to build this trap is a two liter soda or water bottle, a pair of scissors, tape and a craft knife. That’s it!
Building the Trap
Start by cutting about one inch below the head of the bottle. You then want to make another cut two inches below that, so you have two large bottle pieces – the top of the bottle that you just cut off will serve as a funnel, and the bottom will serve as the container of the trap. You will need to place the top of the bottle upside down into the container.
The next step is to ensure that a rat cannot get out once it enters the container of the trap. To do this, you will have to cut some “spikes” in the funnel. Use the craft knife to slice the spikes into the funnel facing the narrower end. About six spikes will do. The spikes should have two sides that are one inch in length. You then have to place the funnel into the container and then tape the edge to seal it.
Using the Trap
To catch the rodents, use peanut butter as bait and place it at the bottom of the container. The trap should be placed in areas where you see a lot of droppings. Once you’ve captured a rat, you can take the trap, cut the tape, and let the rat out somewhere in a field or forest that is far away from your home. You can also kill the rat by placing the trap in a bucket of water. While the trap can be reused, it’s recommended that you simply make a new one so you don’t have to worry about catching any diseases when handling it.
